A tree house within the Old Forest

A large forest Tree House

This tree house has a number of chambers, on several levels, although built in a rather haphazard manner and rather the worse for wear

TREE HOUSES

OF THE HIDDEN REALMS

The development of tree houses is an interesting field of study, one filled with curious and amusing tree structures. Building your house up in the trees provides a measure of protection against wild beasts and enemies, and this, I assume, was the first motive for tree house living.

An excellent example of an Elvish tree house in a hollowed out tree

An old Elvish tree house

The Elves, masters of the tree house building art, have no difficulty in adapting a large hollow tree into a magnificent tree home like this one.

TREE NESTS

The origins of the distinctive tree architecture to be found in the Hidden Realms are fairly clear. Many creatures build their homes in the trees; birds make a bewildering variety of nests using grasses, twigs and mud. Squirrels and other small mammals shelter in holes in larger trees and all sorts of animals, even bears, occupy hollow trees where the middle has rotted away or even been scraped out.

The perfect tree home for a wizard

A wizards' tree house

I delighted in discovering in this splendid example of tree house building, and rather envy the wizard who lives there in such commodious accommodation, hidden away in the Greenwood Forest

It does not take much of a leap of intellect to realise that as smaller tree dwelling bipeds (elves, noggles, faeries and so on) developed they would desire more shelter and protection from the rain and wind than that afforded by an open nest or bower. So the simple woven open nest first acquired a thatched roof and then later walls to connect the nest to the roof and there we have it ~ the most basic form of tree house.
